ABOUT

THE
BEGINNING

When my daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at just 9 years old, it completely changed our lives. We had to adjust everything—from our daily routines to our long-term plans—knowing she would depend on insulin for the rest of her life. It was a tough reality for both of us, and the financial burden didn’t make it any easier. Even with health insurance, a bottle of insulin cost $30, which added up quickly. At the time of her diagnosis, we weren’t aware of insulin pumps or pens. We were only introduced to the traditional needle and insulin bottle. I had to send a bottle of insulin with her to school and daycare for them to keep so she could take it before meals or when needed. Occasionally, I’d get a call from the school nurse saying the insulin bottle had been dropped and shattered, and I’d have to bring another one immediately. Traveling posed even more challenges. I’d pack ice packs to keep the insulin cold, but by the time we arrived, everything would be wet and sticky from the melting ice. I knew there had to be a better way. That’s when I decided to create a solution—a product that could both protect the insulin bottle from breaking and keep the insulin cold during travel. After nearly a decade of designing, refining, and overcoming obstacles, I finally developed and patented “The Insulin Chiller.” It wasn’t an easy road. While I initially tried to handle the patenting process myself, I eventually sought professional help. Finally, in December 2024, I received the exciting news: our patent was approved. My daughter likes to joke, “Mom, this is really your patent—you did all the work.” But I always remind her, “If it weren’t for your diagnosis, this idea never would have come to life. You’re just as much a part of this as I am.” That’s why I listed her as my co-inventor. From the start, this journey has been ours, and it always will be.

  • What is the ideal storage temperature for insulin?
A: Insulin should generally be kept at a temperature between 36°F and 46°F (2°C and 8°C) to maintain its effectiveness. This applies to unopened insulin vials, pens, and cartridges. Once opened or in use, insulin can usually be stored at room temperature (between 59°F and 86°F or 15°C and 30°C) for up to 28 days, depending on the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • What do i need to know about storing insulin.
    1. Refrigeration Store unopened insulin in the refrigerator at 36°F–46°F (2°C–8°C). Do not freeze insulin. Discard any insulin that has been frozen, as freezing destroys its effectiveness. 2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures Keep insulin away from temperatures above 86°F (30°C). Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, or leaving insulin in hot environments, such as a car. 3. Traveling Use an insulated bag or cooling product, like The Insulin Chiller, to maintain the recommended temperature while traveling. 4. Check Manufacturer Guidelines Always follow the specific storage instructions provided by the insulin manufacturer, as some brands may have unique guidelines.
